Cantor Lisa Klinger-Kantor
Cantor Lisa Klinger-Kantor is a native of Brooklyn, New York. Her parents always loved music, and from the earliest they encouraged her love for singing. Lisa spent her childhood and adolescence listening to the great masters of opera and lieder, then pursued her music studies at the Mannes College of Music, majoring in Performance and Voice. She earned her M.A. in Voice from New York University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa. Lisa continued performing opera, lieder, and oratorio in prominent concert halls throughout the United States and as a soloist at the Tanglewood Music Festival. Lisa also maintains an extensive voice studio.
In 1991, Lisa’s father succumbed to a three-year battle with kidney failure. While reciting Kaddish during the next eleven months, she began to explore prayer. Her eyes and ears opened to Jewish liturgy and the beauty of the cantorial art. Her love for singing had finally found its true home. At The Academy for Jewish Religion Lisa’s skills were expanded, encouraged, and nurtured by many wonderful teachers, mentors, and friends.
For the past three years, Lisa has served as Dean of Admissions at AJR. She was served as the cantor at Temple Shaarei Shalom in Bellmore, New York, for thirteen years. Lisa runs an extensive voice studio training rabbis and cantors in the art of using their voice as an instrument of prayer.
