Congregation Beth Israel (CBI) is the oldest continually operating synagogue in Virginia, and our building is among the 30 oldest synagogue buildings in the US. Congregation Beth Israel is a Jewish community dedicated to worship and spiritual growth in an environment that welcomes diversity, engages congregants, provides supportive care to members, and invests in future generations through education. We promote social justice, charitable giving, and lifelong learning. The Associate or Assistant Rabbi is the professional who serves the Jewish community of CBI through the promotion of Jewish life and learning. Responsibilities: Worship & Pastoral Functions, Leadership & Jewish Education & Community Outreach. Qualities: Embracing: Our new rabbi should approach our congregation with warmth and openness. The new rabbi should be excited about and receptive to the wide-ranging ideas and diverse interests of our congregation, Passionate: Our new rabbi should be passionate about teaching Judaism, excited about learning, and engaging with people, families, and the community. We find that we respond well to ruach as expressed in music and song, and to deep intellectual engagement & Leadership: We are a highly collaborative organization that accomplishes our goals through shared visioning and responsibility. Our new rabbi should be someone who is willing to experiment with new ideas that will engage a dynamic community. Priorities: Serve as a role model for Jewish thinking and Jewish living, Work closely with CBI’s educators and families to strengthen our community’s learning and practice & Seek to cultivate genuine connection with people of all ages, meeting them wherever they are on their spiritual path.
