The Merrick Jewish Centre (MJC), home of the largest Hebrew School on the south shore of Long Island, is seeking a full-time Clergy Educator or Director of Education. The Clergy Educator/Director of Education manages and directs the Hebrew School toward its primary objective of fulfilling the Commandment, V’shinntam L’vanecha, under the direction of the Senior Rabbi, School Board and the Board of Directors, as provided in the Constitution of the MJC.  The school operates Monday and Wednesday classes with once a month Sunday family programs, and Hebrew High School for seventh graders on Tuesday nights. The Clergy Educator/Director of Education works in partnership with our professional staff and lay leaders to develop and implement our congregational vision for Jewish learning. The Clergy Educator/Director of Education should be an innovative Jewish Educator who works well with students, parents, lay leaders and teachers. Tradition takes on deep meaning at the Merrick Jewish Centre-Congregation Ohr Torah. We opened our doors in 1929, which makes the MJC the oldest synagogue in Bellmore and Merrick. Since then, we’ve taken to heart our commitment to egalitarian Judaism. Widening opportunities for participation at all levels of Jewish life enhances our worship, our observance and our community. Another key to our longevity has been engaging our children, starting from the time they’re born. The Merrick Jewish Centre Hebrew School offers innovative programming and experiences for children and families that enable them to discover the joy and pride that comes with building strong Jewish bonds. Our high school students enjoy programming and transformational growth at Jewish summer camps. Even when our MJC teens head to college, we offer the Jewish connections they need to thrive. We’re also enriched by our longtime ties to other area synagogues and local houses of worship. Community-wide Tashlich services, concerts, menorah lightings and gatherings in support of Israel are just some of the hallmark events that bring us together and enrich Bellmore and Merrick. Qualifications: Knowledge of Jewish religion and Conservative Judaism culture, Has a passion for educating youth on Jewish values, history and community, Able to facilitate formal classroom and informal Jewish educational experiences, Ability to build and sustain relationships with youth, teens, families, colleagues, and community leaders, A team player who enjoys collaborating with others & Administrative capabilities including logistics and budgeting. For Clergy Educator candidates: Rabbinic or Cantorial Ordination/Smicha from a reputable institution. Job Duties: Oversee the daily operations of the Hebrew School, Research and initiate best practices in Jewish education programs, Evaluate and implement the curriculum, Coordinate Bar/Bat Mitzvah program, Create and attend special Shabbat Family programs and Holiday services with the Rabbi, For Clergy Educator: Perform rabbinic duties, including but not limited to, pastoral counseling, life cycle events, preaching in consultation with the senior rabbi, Supervise youth group and its leaders, Strengthen relationships with parents, synagogue members and the community, Outreach to prospective families, Collaborate with local synagogues for the Hebrew High School program, Provide weekly emails to school families regarding upcoming events and provide quarterly Bulletin articles, Create and implement School calendar, Hire and supervise Hebrew School teachers and tutors, Evaluates teacher performance through written evaluations and teacher reviews on a semi-annual basis, Direct and supervise the Hebrew School administrative assistant, Formulate and manage the annual budget for the School, Oversee publicity and marketing, Collaborate with professional staff on congregational programming, Attend weekly professional staff meetings and monthly School Board meetings & Participate in professional development including at least one conference per year.
