University Shir Hadash Reconstructionist Synagogue - Wheeling, IL

Inclusive/Diverse, Progressive/Liberal, Reconstructionist

Located in the Chicago metropolitan area (the self-proclaimed Jewish capital of the Midwest), Shir Hadash seeks a vibrant, energetic and inspiring Rabbi, to lead the congregation into its next phase. During the last 28 years, with the collaborative leadership of a warm and creative founding Rabbi, we have become a 150 family, financially stable congregation with a voluntary commitment model. We own our beautiful, solar-powered building in which we love to raise our voices with a strong musical worship tradition. With the help of our interim Rabbi, we have thoughtfully examined where we are now, and where we would like to head as we look to the future. We look forward to meeting our next spiritual leader. Our Rabbi will lead weekly Friday night services, occasional Saturday morning services, and festival and High Holiday services; will read Torah; and will incorporate music at all services. The Rabbi will also be available to make wellness visits, participate in adult education, coordinate and facilitate the B’nai Mitzvah process, attend board meetings, and be involved in synagogue administration. We are seeking a charismatic Rabbi with strong leadership skills and an approachable demeanor to help us sustain and grow our membership. As a Reconstructionist synagogue with a strong sense of community, we value collaboration, inclusivity, and the ability to relate well to all ages. Musicality is a must, education from RRC is a plus. Our next Rabbi must be willing to officiate at interfaith weddings. At Shir Hadash, we find it important for the Rabbi to be involved in much more than just leading services. We are seeking a Rabbi who will have a presence at our Religious School and be involved in many areas of education. The religious school is a one day/week program that is led by an Educational Director who works directly with the Rabbi on many school-related topics. Our Rabbi will be intimately involved in the Pastoral Care of our Community. As Shir Hadash means “a New Song,” our Rabbi will be involved in the numerous musical opportunities within our congregation. We are a stable, warm and caring community that embraces Reconstructionist values. When our membership was asked what they most valued about Shir Hadash, they overwhelmingly indicated – COMMUNITY. Our sanctuary seats 180 people and we have a lovely outdoor green space that can be used for a variety of activities. The Rabbi has a private office and would work both in the building and remotely. We have a small staff of employees that works closely with the Rabbi. Link to our mission statement: https://www.shir-hadash.org/mission-vision-values. Salary (including Housing Allowance/Parsonage): $100,000 – $120,000.
