The Hebrew Congregation of Somers (HCS) is seeking a student rabbi for our charming and informal synagogue in northern Westchester. Our synagogue has been in existence for 80 years. We draw families from throughout northern Westchester and southern Putnam Counties. Job duties include: Work with the Ritual Committee and Board of Directors to enhance the religious and cultural experience provided by HCS for both religious school and mature families, Lead Shabbat morning and Kabbalat Shabbat services, as well as select holidays, Shabbat morning services include a Torah service, sermon, and teaching regarding the Torah portion and texts. Services are in person in the Synagogue as well broadcasted on Zoom for those unable to attend in person. Typically, we have one Friday night service and three Saturday services per month. Friday night services usually begin with a potluck dinner followed by a brief service in the sanctuary, Using the existing template, work with the Ritual Committee and cantorial soloist on developing High Holy Day services, Work with the Religious School Director and Education Committee to provide support as needed, Coordinate with the Religious School Director to ensure b’nei mitzvah students are well prepared; specifically knowing as a minimum the Torah service and their Torah portion, Work with the students to prepare their drash, Develop and implement programs such as adult education and Tot Shabbat & If appropriate, provide pastoral counseling. The pay is $500 per Shabbat, negotiable. Services plus Torah reading (Can be read from a book) and either D’var Torah or Torah conversation as part of the service. Hours would include preparing and leading the services, as well as any additional time spent supporting the synagogue. The job can range from a minimum number of hours that it would take to conduct one service per week or expand up to 15-20 hours per week depending on the amount of time the candidate is able to commit to us. Compensation is commensurate with experience, skills & the number of hours worked.
