Jewish Center of the Moriches - Center Moriches, NY
Inclusive/Diverse, Unaffiliated
Small friendly synagogue with hebrew school seeking a Rabbi. Originally Conservative but have been unaffiliated for many years. Somewhere between Conservative and Reform these days. Many people are called to the Bima for English readings and prayers. We involve kids as much as possible. It’s a very relaxed atmosphere. We welcome and are inclusive to all including interfaith families, LGBT congregants and special needs students etc. We consider this a part time position. We won’t be calling on the spiritual leader for day to to day activities. We often have an adult class that is open to adults and post BM students. It might be a weekly thing for 2 months of the year. Rabbi/Cantor typically drives the agenda of Hebrew School. It doesn’t have to be that way all the time. Duties include: Services every Friday night, Saturday Shabbat Morning services – only once a month. Sometimes skipped in Summer. 10 per year, Hebrew School – Sunday mornings from 9 to 11:30. It works out to around 27 Sundays per year, High Holidays – 2 days of Rosh Hashanah and 1 day of Yom Kippur. We do the night before for the first day of RH but not the 2 nd night, Passover dinner – 2 nd night Passover Seder at Synagogue, Chanukah Dinner – on a Friday night during Chanukah, Simchat Torah and Sukkot – we celebrate both of these holidays together on a Friday near the date, Purim – We observe this holiday on the closest Sunday to Purim, during Hebrew School & There may be other events we get invited to like a Menorah Lighting in town. We sometimes have a Yom Hashoah event coordinated with other East End Synagogues. We want someone that can lead the kind of service we are used to but we are open to change. If the person is more religious or less it’s fine as long as they can do the “not so strict” Conservative service we are used to, with lots of English too. We seek someone who is Friendly, Wise, Works well with kids/families/older congregants. We don’t need the best singer in the world but we are used to a Cantor. So if we hire a Rabbi we’d like someone that can still sing a prayer. Salary: 36k annual. We have a room and full bathroom that is just for the Rabbi/Cantor. In the past when we had a Cantor from Brooklyn, he would often stay over there. It’s always there as an option but it’s not a full time living arrangement. Can be good for a weekend.
